Lets go on this Journey Together.
Creating a community online, Behind the scenes ? what am I saying ? Confused? Most online business's are too. What is your message, why you, and not them? All common and irrefutable questions that must be answered.
I have been on the branding side of the fence for my clients but recently have taken the dive into starting my own store online. So here it is. Lets blend the creative with the business and see what happens.
As the thinker I am, I figured seeing as my clients are thinkers and do'ers too - that you would love to come on this journey with me.
All or nothing right? RIGHT. Lets go!
Stage one: Two steps forward
The most important thing I wanted to keep in my mind as I started was, this is part experiment. One of my business mentors told me that initial over emotive investment is dangerous to your vision. When I asked why he said 'if you give it all of your heart in the beginning you will burn out if it needs to be changed'.
At first I didn't know what he meant. At first it sounded as if to contradict everything I had been trained and self exlpored to understand about process. I thought is this why business's usually claim lack of creativity? I thought this because to me, all of my creativity comes from emotion - design is more empathy than anything. So to ignore this principal was for me - inconsistent with my own personal beliefs and what I feel I try to represent.
I approached him again after reflecting on this deeper. I was a little frustrated to say the least and I asked him to explain. He said it wasn't to be void of emotional integrity or self, It was to not pollute the vision by trying to reach for the results before I enter the maze. He said 'If anything you have to be more intuitive and less reactive'.
"More Intuitive, less reactive."
Numbers, Numbers and more, well you get the idea. I was never into accounting..lets be honest, it takes a rare human to enjoy it. If your out there you number crunching mathematical genius the world thanks you and I look forward to working with you!
I have done it on a smaller scale for my design practice but products and dealing with suppliers is a whole other universe. If your thinking of starting your own this isn't aimed at deterring you, just be ready for those late nights - make sure you are working on a business (service or product) you believe in.
sounds obvious, I know but here is the thing. Fredrik Eklund author of The Sell, successful business man and broker, puts it best as he describes motivations for selling or running a business. He says there are two types of people, those motivated by money - they just love it, and there is nothing wrong with that! If that makes you happy then so you should!
Then there is those who are motivated by purpose or freedom with intention. And I agree. Wether your aiming for dollars or not the numbers matter. None of that however is even mildly going to keep you satisfied if your mission is out of check. So choose your path based on what drives you! What gets you excited, and to all the creatives out there - you have my full endorsement to be unapologetically entrepreneurial.
I noticed a lot of the creative world frowns on those making money with more than just their art or design background - the truth is so far as I can see, my creativity has not diminished because I do more than design - in fact I feel it expanding! These are early days but for those on a similar journey past or present - I hear you, and if you know me you know exactly how I feel about nay sayers, If you don't... I can't stand them.
People will question you wether you are in business or not, use this as a relentless filter to slowly detoxify your circle and reinvigorate it with people that support you by way of embracing your vision. Take leaps, you may just sprout wings.
“You must know in your heart that you will succeed – or even more important, that you have already succeeded but can always do better” - Fredrik Eklund, The Sell.
